Cancer of the Penis
Important points from this section
* The cancer of the penis is a disease in which cells were formed malignancies (cancer) in the tissue of the penis.
* The infection with human Papilloma virus may increase the risk of developing cancer of the penis.
* Among the signs that could indicate cancer of the penis that there are injuries, the flow and bleeding.
* To detect (find) and diagnose cancer of the penis, using tests that examine the penis.
* Certain factors affect prognosis (chance of recovery) and treatment options.
Penis cancer is a disease in which cells were formed malignancies (cancer) in the tissue of the penis.
The penis is an organ of male reproduction, cylindrical in shape, which carries urine and semen outside the body. It contains two types of erectile tissue (spongy tissue with blood vessels that are filled with blood to produce an erection):
* Corps cavernous, two columns of erectile tissue that make up the majority of the penis.
* Body sponge: a single column of erectile tissue that makes up a small part of the penis. The body sponge surrounds the urethra (the tube that leads urine and semen outside the body).
The erectile tissue is surrounded by connective tissue and covered with leather. Glens (head of the penis) is covered by a loose skin is called foreskin. The infection with human Papilloma virus may increase the risk of developing cancer of the penis.
Anything that increases the possibility of contracting a disease is called risk factor.
Circumcision may help prevent infection with human Papilloma virus (HPV). Circumcision is an operation in which a doctor pulls a portion or the entire foreskin of the penis. Many men were circumcises shortly after birth. The men not circumcised at birth may be at greater risk of developing cancer of the penis.
Other risk factors for cancer of the penis include:
* Having more than 60 years of age.
* Suffer from phimosis (a disorder in which the foreskin of the penis can not be pulled back over the glens).
* No practice good personal hygiene.
* Having many sex partners.
* Consume products made from snuff.
Among the signs that could indicate cancer of the penis that there are injuries, the flow and bleeding.
These and other symptoms may be caused by cancer of the penis. Other disorders can cause the same symptoms. Should consult a doctor if any of the following problems:
* Redness, irritation or a wound on his penis.
* A mass in the penis.
To detect (find) and diagnose cancer of the penis, using tests that examine the penis.
You can use the following tests and procedures:
* Physical examination and background: an examination of the body to check general signs of health, including control of the penis, to see if there are signs of disease, such as lumps or anything else that seems abnormal. It was also making medical history of illness and the patient’s previous treatments.
* Biopsy: removal of cells or tissue for a pathologist to observe under the microscope and test for the presence of signs of cancer.
The prognosis (chance of recovery) and treatment depend on the following aspects:
* The stage of cancer.
* The location and size of the tumor.
* If the cancer was newly diagnosed or recurrence (again).
